Giacomo Bove

The history of the search for the Northeast Passage is studded with victims and failures. The Danes, the Dutch, the Swedes, the Russians, the Spaniards, the French, the Americans and the British tried it: from Parry to Cook, from Payer to Weyprecht, to name the best known. Finally, in 1879 the success with the “Vega”, a reinforced whaling ship, commanded by Adolf Erik Nordenskiƶld: on board, also the Italian Royal Navy Officer Giacomo Bove.

The seminar is structured in two parts: the first will discuss the expedition, with particular attention to some crucial events; in the second, the meteorological, hydrographic and botanical research conducted by the crew will be examined.
